NEWS UPDATE (3/10/07)

Noah Gauthier Earns First All American at NCAA Nationals

Noah threw 57-3 in the 35-lb weight throw yesterday, good enough for an eighth place finish at NCAA Nationals and the last All American place. His best throw was his first and he was sitting in fifth place after that first round. A foul in the second round prevented any major comeback, but he was able to maintain his top eight status. Ninth place was 55-5, so Noah was solidly eighth. The winning throw was made by Brandon Houle, a senior from Wisconsin-Oshkosh, who threw 63-11.75, over a foot in front of the second place finisher. Noah is the third best junior in the country, so prospects look good for next year.

At the same meet the women's DMR team also finished eighth, ending a Cinderella-story season with an All American title. The team ran another PR of 12:03.29, nearly a full two seconds in front of their PR from ECACs last weekend. That time is also a new school record. Katie Bash '10 ran a PR of 3:40, Izzy Alexander '09 ran 58 point for the 400, Jen Caban '07 ran 2:17 for the 800, and KMoore ran 5:04 for the mile. KMoore will run the 5000 this afternoon, and is seeded 15th out of 15. Regardless of what happens, all Bates athletes who went to Nationals will return to Lewiston with All American titles.

The meet was held at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, where, among other impressive track and field performances over the years, Jim Ryun set the world record in the 800 in 1966 with a time of 1:44.

Results from Friday's competition is posted here

Results from Saturday (look for KMoore) are being posted here as they happen

Miley Takes Second in ECAC Pentathlon

John Miley finished second in the pentathlon after the first day of competition at the ECAC Championships hosted by Wesleyan College. Miley ended with 3312 points, just 69 shy of Joe Northrup's '05 school record. In the same event Noah Glick finished in 12th and Erik Born was right behind in 13th.

Noah Gauthier finished in eighth place in the shot put with a toss of 47-11.75.

Due to the inclement weather in Maine throughout Friday, Bates decided on Thursday afternoon to forfeit competition in most event areas. The men and women's teams were scheduled to leave Bates at 10:30 on Friday but instead, on Thursday night a van went down with the pentathletes, Noah Gauthier, Matt Lopez, the women's DMR team (who ended up winning in 10:05.21, which puts them at eight in the country), and Julie Shelkey (who recored a seasonal PR in the pole vault with a leap of 10-06.75, good enough for fifth place).

Noah and Lopez will both compete in the weight throw tomorrow, but for the rest of the team the indoor season is over and training will begin for outdoor track. The first meet of the season will again be at Tufts' Snowflake Classic on March 31.

Results from the first day of ECAC competition have been posted here.

Miley Finishes Second in Pentathlon on Day 1 of DIII New Englands

John Miley came within 17 points of breaking Joe Northrup's school record in the pentathlon this afternoon on the first day of competition at DIII New Englands hosted by Bates. Nonetheless, Miley finished second overall to Tufts' Nathan Scott with 3,364 points. Miley earned PRs in 3 of the 5 events, including a win in the 1000m (2:44), in which he narrowly held off Scott.

Noah Glick's 6-3.5 in the high jump propelled him to an eighth place finish (top 8 are All New England) with 3,162 points. Erik Born finished in eleventh with 3,082 points and Andrew Tibbetts was twelfth with 2,895 points.

Twenty athletes competed in the pentathlon, and Bates emerged from the first day with 9 points going into tomorrow's main events.

Bates Fares Well at BU and MIT

While there were plenty of teams present at both BU's Valentine Invitational and MIT's Coed Invitational, both were non-scoring meets. The emphasis this weekend, therefore, was on individual goals and attempt at qualification standards rather than team goals like last week's State of Maine Championships and next week's DIII Championships.

On Friday Bates sent several athletes to the Valentine Invitational at Boston University. Fudge started things off at 1 pm in the 5k by running 16:31, not as well as he would have liked, but a valiant attempt after a week with little rest and being slightly rushed getting off the van in Boston. Percy was up next in the 3k, where he ran a PR of 8:50, qualifying for DIIIs and ECACs. I credit that race to a 4 mile warmup I did as part of Colby's Dan Vassallo and Bowdoin Nate Krah's post-5k-cooldown around Fenway Park. John Miley had a rough 400m race as he went out fairly fast for the first 200 and couldn't maintain it for the last 200, but he will be getting ready for a very competitive pentathlon this Friday at New Englands. Capone ran 22.72 in the 200, a solid time, but complained that he didn't get out well. In the 800 Griff Stabler ran a collegiate PR of 2:01, despite being boxed in at several points during the race. CJ Murray returned after last week courageous effort in the 1000 with another attempt, which worked this time. CJ ran 2:34, almost winning his heat, and also qualifying for both DIIIs and ECACs. The last event of the meet came was the 500 at 11:30 pm. Sam Thomas and Sam Murphy  ran 1:06.66 and 1:08.67 respectively. CJ and both Sam's had to spend the night in Boston since their races were so late. The rest of the guys returned back to Bates at around 1:30 am after the women's DMR team ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12:05.

Today at MIT things went pretty well too. Graham Raymond had a fantastic day as he finished 4th in the 55m Dash in 6.94. Graham also threw 46-2 in the weight, good enough for DIIIs. In the 3k Sauce ran 9:27 and Adam "Wheats" Blythe ran 9:48. Drabo had a great day in the triple jump, as he had a season best of 45-3. Noah Glick finished 4th in the high jump with a leap of 6-01.25. A 4 x 8 team consisting of Ryan Dean, Evan Michaelson, Steve Fukuda, and Tim Natriello joined forces for the first time (for some it was their first collegiate 800) to run 9:17.

It was a busy weekend for everyone, especially Coach Fresh, and Bates will be getting ready to host the DIII New England Championships next weekend. This will be a very exciting event. We look forward to both the competition and the honor of hosting the meet.

Results from MIT can be found here.

Bates Finishes Second at State Meet; Capone and Gauthier Take Best in Track and Field Awards

Bowdoin won the State of Maine Championships today with 181.50 points and Bates was fairly close behind in second with 163. Big highlights, however, came from Matt Capone and Noah Gauthier who took the Jim Westcott Best in Track Award and Peter Goodrich Best in Field Award, respectively. This was Noah's second time winning the Goodrich award, and three years ago his brother, Dustin (who got engaged last week), received the award - so it's becoming kind of a family tradition.

Bates took home eight State of Maine titles. Capone won both the 55m Dash in 6.63 and the 200m Dash in 22.97. Sam Thomas won the 600 in 1:24.73, and the 4 x 400 team decisively won in 3:30.99. In the field events freshman Noah Glick won the high jump in 1.86m, Emmanuel Drabo won the Triple Jump in 13.13m, and Gauthier won both the weight throw and shot put in 17.38, and 15.00m respectively.

More will follow tomorrow, I promise.

Results can be found here.

DMR Team Runs 10:38

Bates competed on the first day of the Terrier Classic meet on Friday, hosted by Boston University. BU's track, with it's great surface and bank, provided an excellent opportunity for the Bobcats to get a good qualifying mark in for the DIII meet.

The team ran 10:38 overall. CJ Murray started things off in the 1200 with a leg of 3:15, Capone in the 400 with 51., Sam Thomas in the 800 with 2:05, and Andrew Percy in the mile with a 4:26 leg.

In other exciting news, KMoore competed earlier in the day at BU in the 5000 and ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:27.

There were many excellent DI teams in the eleven-team, one heat race, including Duke and Providence. Duke ended up winning in 10:04 but were followed closely behind in second place  by DIII New England rivals Keene State with a time of 10:05. Tomorrow at BU Percy and CJ will run the open mile; Capone, Thomas, James Packard, and Carlos Castro will run the 4 x 400; Thomas will run the open 400 and Capone will run the open 200.

The rest of the team will compete at the USM Invitational in Gorham.

New Photos from Tufts Meet

The track and field team is lucky enough to have Tom Leonard '78 back again from a great cross country season documenting every race the team participated in.

Tom, who lives in Connecticut, makes it to every meet with his camera and tirelessly takes literally hundreds of professional-quality shots of the team.

Until a separate album has been made, some of the photos Tom took this past weekend at Tufts are posted at www.batesxc.shutterfly.com. The password is still "gobobcats".

Bates finished second in the 15-team Tufts Invitational #2. Things got off to a great start on Friday night with John Miley winning the pentathlon with a PR of 3,283 points.

Matt Capone had a huge day, placing 3rd in the 55m Dash, 2nd in the 200m Dash, and participated in the second place 4 x 400m relay team. Sam Thomas won the 500m Dash in 1:07.84, immediately after competing in the 55m Dash finals. Andrew Percy was 4th in the 800 and CJ Murray followed immediately behind in 5th. Andrew Tibbetts was fourth in the 55m Hurdles, and the DMR team was 5th overall. Emmanuel Drabo won the triple jump again in 44-08.25, and Noah Gauthier was second in both the shot put and weight throw with tosses of 46-10.00 and 55-00.75 respectively.

A more in depth story will follow tomorrow, but for now full results are posted here

Bates Finishes Second at Home Meet versus MIT and Coast Guard

Okay, sorry about the lag time - it was a busy weekend. T Unit came up to visit along with recent Bates runner David Krause.

MIT won the annual tri meet with 165 points, and was followed by Bates with 101, and Coast Guard with 88. This was the first home meet for every athlete on the team except the seniors. Co-captain Noah Gauthier was a big highlight of the meet, as he provisionally qualified for Nationals in the weight throw with a winning toss of 56-03.75

While MIT took many of the wins, Bates showed tremendous depth in nearly every event area. Co-captain Matt Capone won the 55m Dash in 6.69 and came back with a solid second place in the 200m with a time of 23.02. Co-captain Sam Thomas was right behind in 23.29. Sam finished second in the 400 with an unbelievable finishing kick starting about 25 meters from the finish line. It was tough to determine who won without looking at the video. Coast Guard's Thomas Adams beat Sam's 51.66 by three one hundredths on a second to take the win.

Bates took 3-6 in the 600m with freshman James Paone leading the group in 1:26.92 and followed by Watson (who won the second heat) in 1:27.74, Andrew Tibbetts in 1:29.04, and Sam "Schmuel" Murphy in 1:29.07. Both CJ and Percy tripled during the meet. In the mile Percy finished 5th in 4:32 and was followed by CJ in 6th with a time of 4:35. The 800 was a rough event for Bates as MIT and Coast Guard took the first 6 positions. In the 1000 Coast Guard's Mike Flint and Jake Ruzevick from MIT took control of the race from the get-go finishing 1-2 respectively in 2:31 and 2:32. Percy finished 4th in the race in 2:40, with co-captain John Miley in 9th in 2:46 - ordinarily good enough for about 800 points in the decathlon. In the 3k, Dusty and Fudge had pretty solid opening races, finishing 9th and 10th respectively in 9:34 and 9:35.

The 4 x 4 was an exciting event, with all three teams crossing at seemingly the exact same time. Schmuel, Tibbetts, Capone, and Sam Thomas ran the event and ended up winning in 3:32.49. The MIT team was DQ'd due to a handoff violation. Finally, for the running events, the 4 x 800 finished second to Coast Guard. Percy led off and handed off to Paone, to Watson, to CJ and the team ran 8:29 overall, 4 seconds behind Coast Guard's winning time.

Noah Glick won the high jump in a competitive 10 man field with a jump of 6-01.25. Emmanuel Drabo took 4th in the Long Jump but came back to win the Triple Jump. Drabo had been sitting in 4th place in the TJ throughout the event but moved himself up to first on his final attempt and ended up with a final distance of 43-05.25 - over a foot in front of the second place MIT athlete. In addition to Noah's win in the weight throw, Matt Lopez took third overall with a toss of 47-06.25. Graham Raymond and Rich McNiel were 5th and 6th respectively. Noah took the shot put with a put of 46-11.50. Lopez and McNiel were 5th and 6th respectively with throws of 41-07.25 and 40-10.25.

Overall, this was a good meet. MIT historically does well at this early season meet. Last year we lost to Coast Guard, so it was nice moving up this year. The bottom line, though, is that Saturday was an excellent meet with three very strong teams competing against each other. All three teams have great individual talent and depth in most event areas.

Happy Holiday's from Bates Track & Field!

As Hanukkah and Christmas come to a close, it seems appropriate (for some reason) to think of those that will not be joining us when we return to Bates in 2 weeks: Harrison Little, Will Viti, Tim McCall, Alex Whalen.

That was emotional....

Anyway, the track team has been training in full force during the Winter Break and will be ready for competition the first weekend after we return to Lewiston.

Happy Holidays

NEWS (12/12/06)

Last Friday (the day before the Pentathlon), the men and women's track teams came together for the first ever Bates Holiday Classic, a mini intra-team meet. Obviously the idea came from the women's team, but it was pretty fun. The sprinters on both teams ran 300s. The mid distance women ran a 1000 and the mid distance and distance men also ran a 1000. Finally, excluding the pentathletes, the entire men and women's roster was randomly mixed to form 12 co-ed 4 x 400m relay teams. The first two legs on each team were guys and the last two were women.

Matt Capone had the fastest time of the day in the 300 (36.83), but was followed close behind by Kenny Adams '07 (37.95), and Carlos Castro (38.11). In the 1000, three runners ran under 2:40: Conor Welch '10 (2:38.08), James Paone '10 (2:38.09), and CJ Murray '09 (2:38.94).

20 minutes after the men's 1000 ended, the 4 x 400 began. The fastest 4 x 4 team came from the second heat. Conor Welch (56.11), Griff Stabler '10 (56.48), Amy Rosania '08 (69.1), and Katie Bash '10 (67.2) ran a combined time of 4:09.09, but were disqualified due to a false start by Conor. Hey, he runs cross country, give him a break. The second fastest team was CJ, Graham Raymond, Julie Shelkey, and Jesse Sawyer with a combined time of 4:14.09.

Bates Qualifies 4 Pentathletes for DIII New Englands

Erik Born '10 led the Bobcats with his second place performance at the Bates Pentathlon held this afternoon in Merrill Gymnasium. This was Born's first pentathlon and first collegiate competition. All 10 competing athletes represented Bates, Bowdoin, Tufts, and University of Southern Maine and all qualified for DIII New Englands. Born scored 3,034 points, eighth on the Bates All Time List. Andrew "Dil" Tibbetts '07 was third overall with 2,935 points, ninth on the Bates All Time List. Noah Glick '10 was 5th overall with 2,896 points in his first collegiate competition and placed 10th on the Bates All Time List. Finally, Sam "Mia" "Schmuel" "SMurph" Murphy '07 was 10th overall in his first decathlon with 2,527 points.

The competition started at noon with the 55m hurdles and ended at 4:35 with the 1,000. Born had an excellent opener in the hurdles with a third place performance behind overall winner Jared Engelking of Tufts. Born finished third again in the long jump and was closely followed by Tibbetts and Glick in fifth and sixth respectively. The shot was arguably the most entertaining to watch because Schmuel was participating in it. He did not finish in last place, so nice job Sam. Noah Glick shined in the high jump with a strong third place performance, and Schmuel came back to win the 1,000 in the last 2 laps.

The following table breaks down the individual results of the Bates competitors from today's Pentathlon
